Waste Management Done Right

Every day across most industrialized nations we hear that the environment is at risk from global warming and various pollutants. Unfortunately, our ignorance of the signs of climate change could be cataphoric to our world, including for flora and fauna, not just humans.

We each play a small part in making our own environments a little better and this blog is our way of making a small contribution. In this blog, we will republish articles, news stories, and reports, as well as write our own to help spread the importance our looking after our environment. As the science of climate change is well known and documented, our stories and publications will be more about businesses that are doing amazing things with recycling to reduce waste and landfills, as well as advising you of how you can contribute to better recycling initiatives via waste transfer stations and recycling programs and plant locations.

Most major cities and local governments offer some form of recycling program or initiative, some more than others. Private industry is also stepping up and becoming involved in the operation of a range of waste facilities. These privately run plants are designed to accept particular waste from commercial businesses, households and, construction activities. A growing number of these facilities provide opportunities for the recycling and or re-use of materials like batteries (lead can be extracted), household goods (repurposed), aluminium cans (recycled in other aluminium products) and various other metals.

This map identifies a range of waste facilities entered on the Queensland Government’s environmental authority register including:

Talk to your local council

Talking to your local council is a great first step to finding out what recycling initiatives and facilities are available in your local area. You will often find the council staff very helpful and they will be able to provide you with a list of:

  • transfer or re-purposing stations
  • metal recyclers
  • construction, commercial and demolition recycling operators
  • organic processing plants
  • battery and tyre recyclers
  • paint and chemical recyclers.

What can be recycled?

There is plenty of information available on the internet relating to recycling. However, not all local recyclers or local councils accept the same materials. The reason being is recycling plants can vary on what they geared up to recycle. Therefore, it is important that you seek advice locally. As a general rule, you will find that most products made from these materials can be recycled readily:

  • aluminium containers and cans
  • household batteries and lead acid batteries (typically car batteries)
  • paper, tissue and cardboard products
  • clean polystyrene (without other types of plastic attached to it)
  • electronic waste (often a specialist recycler is required)
  • empty LPG or BBQ gas bottles
  • fire extinguishers
  • light bulbs (including fluorescent tubes)
  • metals (both non-ferrous and ferrous)
  • mobile phones (a growing number of recyclers around)
  • used engine oil
  • used cooking oil
  • paint (both oil-based or water-based)
  • green waste (lawn and tree clippings)
  • white goods, household furniture (great for repurposing) and appliances.

Large qualities of waste

If you find yourself having a big clean-out at home or you are a business that regularly needs waste to be removed, then you might want to consider hiring a skip bin. This service means that you can dispose of your waste in bulk and leave the recycling up to the skip bin provider. You will find many skin bin services in your local area, but one that leads the way in recycling and management of bulk waste is Skip Bin Hire Gold Coast. A Google search in your local area will give you plenty of options if you aren’t fortunate enough to live in the Gold Coast area.
